Pope Francis expresses ‘shame’ over French Church sex abuse scandal
"I wish to express to the victims my sadness and pain for the trauma they have suffered," he said during his weekly audience at the Vatican.
"And also my shame, our shame, my shame for the inability of the Church for too long to put them at the centre of its concerns.
"I pray and we all pray together -- to you Lord the glory, to us the shame. This is the time for shame."
An independent commission on Tuesday revealed that French Catholic clergy sexually abused around 216,000 minors over seven decades since 1950, a "massive phenomenon" that was covered up by a "veil of silence".
The commission's two-and-a-half-year inquiry and 2,500-page report prompted outrage as the Catholic Church in France and around the world faces a growing number of abuse claims and prosecutions.
Dealing with the avalanche of revelations about sexual abuse by clergy was one of the biggest challenges that Francis faced when he was elected pope in 2013.

He declared an end to impunity and changed Vatican law to make reporting abuse mandatory, but victims have warned it is not enough.
Francis expressed his sorrow for the victims in a statement Tuesday issued through his spokesman, but his comments on Wednesday went further.
He urged the clergy to keep working to ensure such situations "are not repeated", offering his support to French priests to face up to "this trial that is hard but healthy".
And he invited French Catholics to "assume their responsibilities to ensure that the Church is a safe home for all".
'Cruel indifference'
The report found that the "vast majority" of victims were pre-adolescent boys from a variety of social backgrounds. Their abusers were mainly priests, bishops, deacons and monks.
When claims against lay members of the Church, such as teachers at Catholic schools, are included the number of child abuse victims climbs to 330,000 since 1950, the report found.
"Until the early 2000s, the Catholic Church showed a profound and even cruel indifference towards the victims," commission chief Jean-Marc Sauve told a press conference that unveiled the nearly 2,500-page report.
Archbishop Eric de Moulins-Beaufort, president of the Bishops' Conference of France (CEF), which co-requested the report, expressed his "shame and horror" at the findings.
"My wish today is to ask forgiveness from each of you," he told the news conference.
Sauve had already told AFP on Sunday that a "minimum estimate" of 2,900 to 3,200 clergy members had sexually abused children in the French Church since 1950.
Yet only a handful of cases prompted disciplinary action under canonical law, let alone criminal prosecution.
The commission began its work after Pope Francis vowed to address abuse by priests in May 2019, ordering people aware of cases to report them to Church officials.

Religious TV channel Loveworld fined £25,000 for broadcasting Covid conspiracies
Religious TV channel Loveworld fined £25,000 for broadcasting Covid conspiracies
Religious TV channel Loveworld has been fined £25,000 for broadcasting unsubstantiated conspiracy theories about coronavirus.
It is the third time the channel has been found to have breached the rules of broadcasting watchdog Ofcom this year and Loveworld was previously also fined £125,000 in March.
Loveworld’s latest fine relates to two episodes of current affairs programme Full Disclosure which were broadcast on February 11 and 12.
During the shows presenters “made a number of unevidenced, materially misleading and potentially harmful statements about the coronavirus pandemic and vaccines”, according to Ofcom.
False claims made on the channel included that the coronavirus vaccine makes you feel as ill as the actual illness and that there are serious side-effects and medical complications that can result from the jabs.
Trials have shown the vaccines to be safe and effective.

An Ofcom statement said: “Ofcom is clear that it is legitimate for broadcasters to discuss and scrutinise the Government’s public health response to the coronavirus pandemic – including the potential side-effects of vaccinations – and that it may be in the public interest to do so.
“However, Loveworld’s presentation of misleading claims without sufficient challenge or context risked causing serious potential harm to viewers, at a time when people were particularly likely to be seeking reliable information relating to the UK’s vaccination programme.”
Ofcom labelled the rule breaches “serious”.
A spokeswoman for the watchdog said: “Broadcasters have editorial freedom to debate the response to coronavirus – including the vaccination programme.
“However, unproven claims must be put into sufficient context, and our investigation found that these programmes contained harmful, unevidenced statements.
“We consider this a serious breach of our rules and have today sanctioned Loveworld by imposing a financial penalty of £25,000.”
Ofcom has previously said it is prioritising cases relating to coronavirus which could cause potential harm to viewers.
Loveworld is a religious television channel broadcast on satellite to a UK audience, from an Evangelical Christian denomination with a global network of churches.

Three Swiss Guards who refused to take Covid jab quit Pope’s bodyguard
Three Swiss Guards who refused to take Covid jab quit Pope’s bodyguard
Three Vatican Swiss Guards who have refused to be vaccinated against Covid-19 upon Holy See orders have voluntarily left the storied corps to return to Switzerland, a Swiss Guard official has said.
Lieutenant Urs Breitenmoser told the Associated Press that all Swiss Guards had been asked to be vaccinated “to protect their health and that of the others they come into contact with as part of their service”.
“Three members of the Guard have chosen not to adhere to that request, voluntarily leaving the corps,” Breitenmoser said.
Three other guardsmen are temporarily suspended from duty while they await vaccination, he said.

The prime duty of the all-male corps, with its coluorful uniforms and plumed helmets, is to protect the pontiff.
The members stand guard during papal ceremonies as well as at the various entrances of the tiny, independent walled city state near Rome’s Tiber River.
During the pandemic, the guardsmen on duty have worn protective surgical masks.
Pope Francis, who has been vaccinated against Covid-19, has repeatedly stressed the altruistic and health value of receiving the shots during the pandemic.
Breitenmoser noted that last month the head of the Pontifical Commission of Vatican City State had issued an ordinance that people entering Vatican areas need either to be vaccinated or have a recent negative test.
That includes tourists wanting to see the Vatican’s treasures, including Michelangelo’s frescoes in the Sistine Chapel.

Pelosi attacks San Francisco archbishop for calling abortion a ‘child sacrifice’
Pelosi attacks San Francisco archbishop for calling abortion a ‘child sacrifice’
The House speaker, and a devout Catholic, said she was “from a pro-life family” who believed that it was a woman’s right to chose, when asked about the archbishop’s comments on Thursday.
As The Washington Times reported, Ms Pelosi also criticised San Francisco’s archbishop for commenting on what were, in her own words, a woman’s “business”.
It comes as members of Congress prepare to vote on a bill House Democrats hope will codify the abortion rights of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v Wade, and which are currently under attack in Republican-controlled states.
© AP: Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi:
Archbishop Salvatore J Cordileone, discussing the Women's Health Protection Act, allegedly called the medical procedure a form of “child sacrifice” ahead of the House voting on the bill on Friday.
He was reported as saying that the bill – which would stop states such as Texas from rolling back women’s rights – was “nothing short of child sacrifice, and clearly in reaction, among other things, to the recently passed Texas Heartbeat bill”.
The archbishop also stated that it was “surely the type of legislation one would expect from a devout Satanist, not a devout Catholic”.
Responding to that criticism, Ms Pelosi added on Thursday that she was Catholic and that as a woman, it was “my right to choose” whether to have children.
The Texas abortion law, and that being considered in other Republican states, reduce the time frame in which a woman can legally have an abortion – in spite of opposition from medical professionals and women's’ rights campaigners.
Ms Pelosi went on to say that her and the archbishop “had a disagreement about who should decide this”, and that she believed “that God has given us a free will to honour our responsibilities”.
“For us, [having a child] was a complete and total blessing, which we enjoy every day of our lives, but it’s not our business how other people choose the size and timing of their family,” Ms Pelosi said.
It comes as one Republican senator, Susan Collins, indicated that she would not support the Women's Health Protection Act bill when it comes in front of the upper chamber – which could be next week.
